Bed Bugs Putting the Bite on North America

VENTURA, CA — New reports of bed bug infestations at upscale retailers, public transportation, 5-star hotels and multi and single-family housing are quickly demonstrating why the blood-sucking creatures are quickly becoming the #1 pest in North America.

A study released this week by the National Pest Management Association found that pest control operators consider bed bugs the most difficult pest to eradicate, even more than cockroaches and ants.

ThermaPure, Inc., (www.thermapure.com)the industry pioneer in the use of heat to kill bed bugs and their eggs, has released updated information to help consumers tell the difference between fact and fiction.

Bed Bugs – Fact & Fiction

1. Bed bugs are only found in run down and dirty structures.
FALSE. Bed bugs are non discriminating. They have been found in 5-star hotels, cruise ships, single-family homes and public housing alike. They will hitchhike equally on designer luggage or discarded mattresses.

2. Bed bugs are only a problem right now in more densely populated areas
like New York and New Jersey.
FALSE. Bed bugs have reached epidemic proportion throughout North America. While the New York area is one of the country’s bed bug hotspots, the pests have been reported in all 50 states as well as in Canada. Urban locations have higher reported occurrences, but are commonly found in more rural locations, as well.

3. Bed bugs feed on human blood in the middle of the night like vampires.
TRUE. Bed bugs are most active in the early morning hours when humans are normally in their deepest sleep. A blood meal usually lasts around 10-15 minutes.

4. Bed bugs are only found on mattresses and bedding.
FALSE. Bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices of a structure, inside wall cavities, on walls and ceilings, under carpeting, in other upholstered furniture, even in electric outlets and within electronics. Mattresses are closest to their meals, so they are often found there.

5. Pesticides are the most effective way to kill bed bugs.
FALSE. While pesticide applications play a role in overall integrated pest management, there are definite down sides, including having to often apply pesticides multiple times on the same structure and also discarding and replacing mattresses. In fact, bed bugs are already showing resistance to powerful professionally applied pesticides according to recent university research (Dr. Michael Potter, University of Kentucky).

6. Heat is proving to be the method of choice for killing bed bugs and their eggs.
TRUE. Laboratory testing has shown that bed bugs begin to die when temperatures reach as little at 113 degrees F. Field research has shown 100% effectiveness in killing bed bugs and their eggs when exposed to high temperatures. The predominant (and original) heat and filtration technology, ThermaPure (www.thermapure.com), has been applied to tens of thousands of structures throughout North America.

7. Encasing your mattress with a plastic cover will solve the bed bug problem.
FALSE. Mattress covers can help with bed bugs already found on the mattress, and only partial control thereafter. Encasements will not stop bed bugs from crawling onto your sheets and blankets from behind headboards. Since bed bugs hide in many parts of the structure, as well as on other pieces of furniture, encasements should only be viewed as one possible component in the fight against bed bugs.

8. Bed bugs can be a source of health-related problems.
TRUE While there is no current evidence to show that bed bugs can transmit disease, we do know that bed bug bite victims often report itchy, inflamed skin and on rare occasions victims have reported asthma attacks and other allergic reactions. According to a study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, bed bug bites should be considered a possible cause of iron-deficiency anemia in people who have signs of severe bedbug infestation.

9. Bed bugs are the most difficult pest to control.
TRUE. According to a recent survey from the National Pest Management Association 76% of pest control operators surveyed say bed bugs are the toughest — even more than cockroaches, termites and ants.

10. Heat treatments do more than just kill bed bugs.
TRUE. When properly applied by trained technicians, ThermaPureHeat® pasteurizes a structure, killing bacteria, viruses, some types of mold and allergens, and even odors.

About ThermaPure®
ThermaPure®, Inc. is based in Ventura, CA. The company’s ThermaPureHeat® technology utilizes structural pasteurization to sanitize structures. The ThermaPureHeat® process can also kill mold, bacteria, viruses and insects, including bed bugs, termites and their eggs.

5 month infant sleep, month infant sleep, infant sleep, baby sleep, infant sleep longer

Are you tired and frustrated trying to help your 5 month infant sleep longer at night? Are you lying awake at night anticipating the time when your little one will wake up? Much of the frustration can be eliminated by helping your 5 month infant sleep independently. A baby who sleeps independently is more than likely a baby who sleeps through the night and takes nice, long naps consistently.  Enabling your baby to learn how to sleep longer needs to be a simple and gentle process, and most of the time your baby will never even have to shed a tear.

  • You can teach your baby to know  the difference between day and night. This simply means that your home should be an active and stimulating place during the day, and a quiet one at night.
  • At night, reduce the amount of noise and stimulation. If your Infant is always allowed to get themselves back to sleep, they will learn the difference between day and night.
  • When your baby is awake, engage him or her by talking, singing and playing. Surround your baby with light and normal household noises. Lots of activity during the day can help promote better sleep at night.
  • Regular naps are important, but sleeping for large periods of time during the day may leave your baby wide awake at bedtime.
  • Try some of the most relaxing favorites; bathing, cuddling, singing or reading. Soon your baby will associate these activities with sleep.
  • If you play bedtime music, choose the same tunes each time you put your baby in the crib. This will help your baby associate bed with the process of falling asleep.
  • Remember to place your baby to sleep on his or her back, and clear the crib or bassinet of blankets and other soft items.
  • Your baby may fuss or cry before getting into a comfortable position and getting to sleep. If the crying doesn’t stop, speak to your baby calmly and stroke his or her back. Your comforting presence may be all your baby needs to fall asleep.

Hopefully these few tips will help your 5 month infant sleep better during the night and by doing so you will get your much deserved rest as well. There is so much information on the Internet these days that can help your 5 month infant sleep at night. A word of caution though; you must consider everything you read very carefully and act accordingly because there is a lot of bogus information out there that could possibly endanger your little one.

Do you wonder whether you’ll ever sleep all the way through the night again? Relax! I have found you a reassuring guide that provides the essential information you need to help your 5 month infant sleep — and stay asleep — all night long. So cheer up: go to www.SleepingBaby.info — a good night’s sleep is just a few short pages away!

Comfort items with your LO?

My son is 10 months old, and he will not sleep without his teddy bear ‘Chauser’. He will also not take a shower or a bath without his ‘life saver’ rubber ducky..

The rubber ducky is a life saver when it comes to screaming fits in the shower and bath.. But Chauser is a problem when all Xander wants to do is play at bedtime.. But it is better than his blanket.. He tore that to shreds.

So, does your little one have any comfort items? If so, what is it? =]

Ohh so cute, Jackson loves his blankie he drags it around everywhere, God forbid any other kid touch is because he freaks out, I wash it so much its getting holes in it, essh I don’t know what i’m gonna do if it falls apart.

How To Write A Song

Did you ever wish that it was your song playing on the radio? It could
be. It is not that hard once you know the formula. With a little
creativity, a little knowledge, a little luck and a good formula to
follow, your song could be one of the next biggest hits.

Songwriting comes easy for some, and is very difficult for
others. I have actually written songs in my sleep, and immediately upon
awaking, written it as quickly as I could get the words on down on
paper.

What I want to discuss here is popular songwriting, like the
songs you hear on the radio. A good pop song, whether rock, country,
middle of the road, is composed of two things: a catchy tune and some
good lyrics.

There is a formula that most great songwriters use to write
great songs. It regards the structure used to write a song. Granted, it
is music and it is art, so the rules are not hard and fast. But if you
want to increase your chances of getting your song on the radio, it is
a good starting point.

Here is the formula. Verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus.

Write that down on paper leaving plenty of space between each word and this will be your script.

Verse

The verse is the part of the song that tells the story, the
part that leads to the chorus. Each verse is usually different, telling
a different part of, or adding to, the story. It usually explains how
you got to the things you are singing about in the chorus.

Chorus.

The chorus is the part of the song that is repeated after each
verse. The lyrics are usually the same each time the chorus comes
around. The verse usually leads to the chorus, and the chorus is
usually the pay off for listening to the verse. Does that make sense?

Here is a lame example (you did not think I would give you my best work, did you?):

(verse)
My dog is sick, he’s got a tick
He’s my best friend, don’t let it end

(chorus)
Oh, woe is me, can’t you see
Woe is me, will I ever be free

(verse)
My car broke down, just out of town
It got towed in, but it’s broke again

(chorus)
Oh, woe is me, can’t you see
Woe is me, will I ever be free

Now, if you would kindly stop laughing at my lame song for a
minute, I want you to think about whether or not you understand my
point. Songwriting is story telling. The verse tells the problems, the
chorus expresses the results or the emotions.

All right, now that you have that mastered, let’s tackle the
bridge. Ah, yeah, there is more to the song than the pain and the
release. We need the diversion. That is what the bridge is; it is the
diversion from the verse and the chorus.

The bridge may have a slightly different melody to it, or it
could even have a different rhythm or a different tempo (Elvis’
“Suspicious Minds” did a great job on this technique).

Let’s go back to the lame song and add a bridge:

(verse)
My dog is sick, he’s got a tick
He’s my best friend, don’t let it end

(chorus)
Oh, woe is me, can’t you see
Woe is me, will I ever be free

(verse)
My car broke down, just out of town
It got towed in, but it’s broke again

(chorus)
Oh, woe is me, can’t you see
Woe is me, will I ever be free

(bridge)
Tomorrow is a better day, I’ve got a new truck on the way
My dog just had a flea it seems, so once again I’ll live my dreams

(chorus)
Oh, woe was me, can’t you see
Woe was me, but now I’m free

The bridge offers a solution to the problems I was having. You
don’t want to leave your listener on the edge of suicide, you want to
give them hope.

Notice, I also changed up the wording of the chorus. This was done to reflect my new found joy.

One more thing on formula. It can be anyway you want, but most verses and chorus come in lines of 4. So, instead of this:

(verse)
Oh, woe is me, can’t you see
Woe is me, will I ever be free

(verse)
My car broke down, just out of town
It got towed in, but it’s broke again

it would be:

Oh, woe is me, can’t you see
Woe is me, will I ever be free
My car broke down, just out of town
It got towed in, but it’s broke again

The same goes for the chorus. Again, if you are creative, do it
however you want. But for a new songwriter, this gives you some
guidelines to scratch out and start carving out your new creation.

One more thing, do not make the notes to the melody so high
that your fans cannot sing along. We are certainly all not Stevie
Wonder.

what is jack johnson’s best song on his new album sleep through the static?

I really like What You Thought You Need…I mean, the whole thing is very good but it all sound a lot alike. That one stood out to me. I also like All At Once. It’s a great intro to the rest of the album. Sleep Through the Static and If I Had Eyes are also very good, just very radio friendly and kind of stereotypical…

Are You Afraid of Nightmares? (Growing Up Smart Body Fact #21)

My son has nightmares. Just like me. They scare the bejeebies out of him. Me, too. My nighttime nemesis was the Wicked Witch of the West. My son won’t say exactly what makes him dread the dark. Not yet.

Fact is we all have nightmares, especially kids. Sometimes, anticipating a bad dream is more upsetting than the actual dream. That’s why it always helps to talk in the clarity of daylight. When the time is right, here’s an article about nightmares written just for kids.

“Have you ever been so scared you couldn’t scream? Nightmares can do that to you. Everybody dreams. And everybody has nightmares once in a while. The good thing about nightmares is that no matter how real they seem, they’re only dreams. They aren’t real and they can’t hurt you.

Stressful things that happen during the day can turn good dreams into bad dreams. Nightmares are almost always connected to something that happened to you or something you saw during the day. Watching a violent movie or reading a scary book can give you nightmares. Problems at school, stress from homework, or problems at home can cause nightmares, too.

Here are a few ideas to help you deal with those bad dreams:

  • Talk to your mom or dad or a friend about the nightmare and how it makes you feel.
  • Sleep with something that makes you feel more secure.
  • Open your bedroom door so you can hear and talk to your family.
  • Use a nightlight so that if you wake up suddenly, you can see where you are.
  • Write down your dreams—good and bad—in a journal exactly as you remember them. A list of dreams will help you understand what’s on your mind and may help you discover what’s causing your nightmares.”

Why do people have dreams and nightmares during sleep?

Sometimes, dreams and nightmares, as I’ve read in a fairly recent Reader’s Digest, is our mind’s way of preparing for something. We run the situation in our head, and we try and see what to make of it. For instance, if you’ve been thinking of that job promotion, you might have a good dream if you’re totally up to it, and you’ll be rolling in the dough at home, and so on. If you’re not too confident, then you might get a nightmare about all of the things that go wrong. In a sense, we use those thoughts that invade our minds as we sleep as a form of preparation. A dream is a desire that we want, a nightmare is the worst case scenario. In either case, we can learn from them – learn what we want, learn what we fear, and learn how to make what we want happen.
